This is GNU GCC 2.8.1, compiled to support C, C++, and Objective-C. It is supplied as an alternate compiler for Slackware, in case you run into any problems with the egcs-1.0.x compiler system used by default. I've found a few programs which wouldn't compile with egcs, but in every case gcc-2.8.1 worked just fine. For various reasons I think the overall quality is still superior with Cygnus' egcs compiler, though. To make this your default compiler, just install it with 'installpkg'. If you decide later to switch back to egcs, just remove this package with 'removepkg' and then reinstall egcs with 'installpkg'.
